POSITION TITLE:       RECREATION CENTER DIRECTOR I

SALARY:                     GRADE 22:      $35,035.66 - $59,560.63

FLSA CLASS:             HOURLY (NON-EXEMPT) 

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:

An employee in this class performs difficult professional work, both administrative and supervisory, in planning and directing activities in a recreation center including afterschool and summer camp programming. Develops a wide range of recreational programs including open gym, pickleball and athletic opportunities at recreation center campus.  Sees that equipment, buildings and grounds are maintained on a daily basis.  Initiative and judgment are required as are firmness and courtesy in constant public contact.  Work is performed in accordance with established policies under general supervision by the recreation Program Director and is evaluated in conferences, by review of records and by appraisal of the effectiveness of programs supervised.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Directs activities at the recreation center and plans and implements programs.  Discusses situations with children, youth and parents and seeks to resolve problems.  Develops and carries out programs, supervises volunteer and part-time personnel. Responsible for maintaining the facilities scheduling and staffing needs. Keeps the equipment, facility and grounds clean and in good repair, issues equipment and maintains equipment inventory.  Keeps records of registrations and attendance at center. Follows all fiscal policies and procedures of the City. Supervises and actively participates in activities and programs.  Performs other duties as required. Operate the facility when programming is needed including nights and weekends. 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Thorough knowledge of department policies, rules and practices.  Thorough knowledge of the methods used in directing and planning recreational activities.  Working knowledge of objectives and methods of public recreation. Ability to supervise the work of others and work with volunteers.  Ability to communicate effectively both orally and written.  Ability to keep order and enforce departmental rules.  Ability to deal tactfully and courteously with the public.  Ability to use good judgment in routine emergency situations.  Ability to keep accurate records.  Ability to maintain effective working relationships with other employees.  Ability to assist in keeping recreation buses and vehicles clean.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Must be able to physically perform the basic life support functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and performing repetitive motions.  Must be able to perform medium work exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.  Must possess the visual acuity to determine the accuracy, neatness and thoroughness of the work assigned, and close visual acuity to perform extensive reading and visual inspection involving small parts.

DESIRABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

Completion of a Bachelor’s Degree in Parks and Recreation Management, Recreation

Administration is preferred or a related field. In addition, one or more years of relevant work experience is preferred.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Must have a valid Class B North Carolina Driver’s License.  Must have or be willing to obtain training in CPR and Standard First Aid.  Must have or be willing to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License, Class B, before the end of the probationary period.
