POSITION TITLE:   W/S PLANT MAINTENANCE TECHNICIAN

SALARY:            GRADE 21:      $16.3628/Hour - $34,034.63/Annually                                                           

FLSA CLASS:             HOURLY (NON-EXEMPT) 

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:

This is an entry-level position in municipal public utilities with multiple opportunities for salary and career advancement. An employee in this class works both independently and with others in the repair and maintenance of equipment and machinery and regular, routine cleaning and maintenance of both grounds, buildings and equipment. Employees in this class are expected to observe the operation of both mechanical and electrical systems and be able to recognize, diagnose and report or repair malfunctioning equipment. Work is evaluated by visual inspections, mechanical evaluation and performance.  Employee in this class are also responsible for performing or assisting with technical work in analyzing water and wastewater samples.  Performs related laboratory work as assigned.  Assists with daily operation of both wastewater plant and collections system equipment.  Responsible for performing a variety of standardized laboratory tests and analysis of wastewater.  Work involves bacteriological testing, quality control, chemical testing, sample collection and general laboratory clerical work.  This employee will also be well versed in the daily activities of plant operations.  Maintains buildings and grounds at the Waste Treatment Plant, pump stations and properties.  Work is performed under the general supervision of the waste treatment maintenance supervisor.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Observes, maintains and repairs machinery and equipment.  Performs labor to maintain pump stations and assist in completing routine plant and pump maintenance.  Maintains buildings and grounds at the Waste Treatment Plant and all pump stations and properties. Daily operation of waste treatment plant and collection systems equipment.  Other duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

General knowledge of modern electrical and mechanical systems.  Ability to prepare and maintain accurate records and reports.  Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.  This employee must be prepared to assist in all aspects of plant operations including laboratory, plant and maintenance operations.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Work in this class as light to medium.  It may occasionally require physical exertion to complete tasks.  This employee must have the visual acuity to prepare and analyze data and figures, operate a computer, use measurement devices, use hand tools and various equipment. This employee is subject to hazards, electrical current and exposure to chemicals.  This employee is subject to atmospheric conditions such as fumes, odors, dust, mists, gases or poor ventilation.  Employee may be required to complete tasks outdoors in varying weather conditions.

DESIRABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school.  Considerable experience in treatment plant operations.  Experience in a treatment plant laboratory.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

This position requires a valid North Carolina Driver’s License.
